	Advisory from ATS President, Dr. Wanner, on LVRS Findings(August 16, 2001) An article authored by the National Emphysema Treatment Trial (NETT) Research Group, to be published in the October 11, 2001 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine reports that patients with emphysema who have a low FEV1 ( <20% of predicted) and either homogeneous emphysema or a very low diffusing capacity(<20% of predicted) are at high risk of death after lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) and unlikely to benefit from the surgery. Among 1033 patients enrolled in the study, 139 met these criteria for severe emphysema; 69 of these patients underwent LVRS and had a 30 day post-operative mortality of 16 % while the remaining 70 patients received me- dical treatment and had 0% mortality. Based on these results, the NETT will no longer randomize patients with severe emphysema to VRS.
